“I don’t want to feel like this anymore.”
Those were the words I said to myself in 2011 after yet another late night filled with too many drinks and greasy bar food. I was only 23 years old, yet I couldn’t deny it anymore -- I was on the fast-track to an early death. I was also fatigued, overweight, and undernourished as a result of living an all-too typical American lifestyle. I woke up groggy every morning and needed two cups of coffee just to kick start my day. I lived on takeout food and drank more alcohol than water. Carbs, sweets and fried foods were my best friends; salads, vegetables and fruits, my worst enemies.
And no matter how much time I spent at the gym, I couldn’t achieve the results I wanted! I could barely run a mile without feeling like I was coughing my lungs out. No matter how many crunches I did, my stomach stayed squishy and soft.
To be honest? I was scared I might be sick. Women in my family have a history of thyroid issues, and I wasn’t sure if I was doomed for the same fate. After seeing a doctor and having some tests done, I discovered I was “healthy.” But I sure didn’t feel like it.
Then I met a triathlete who introduced me to juicing. About the same time, I stumbled upon a documentary called “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead” on Netflix and learned that juicing was the fastest and best way to get proper nutrients into my body. I was instantly hooked on the possibilities, but walking into a juice bar for the first time felt intimidating, and all the juices I tried tasted awful.
I wondered if I would ever be able to change my habits?
That’s when I started experimenting with juicing at home, creating combinations that tasted good to me. I started drinking one juice a day and instantly felt better. After a couple of months of drinking a juice for breakfast and another for lunch, I decided to take the plunge and make my own 3-day juice cleanse. The day after completing the cleanse, I couldn’t believe how good I felt and how much energy I had! I ran 4 miles without coughing, and chowed down an entire chicken salad for dinner that night because my body was craving whole, nutritious food for the first time in years.
I felt like a new person, and knew I would never want to go back to my old habits. Everyone knows how challenging it can be to keep up with eating healthy and going to the gym, but the juice cleanse definitely helps keep me on track. The more I juiced, the more positive results I saw in myself. I completed my first Spartan obstacle race and killed it. I ran my first half marathon and averaged 10 minutes a mile (not too shabby for a person that hates running!). I quit drinking alcohol altogether. Even my husband completed a 10-day juice cleanse with me and lived to tell about it!
It’s been fun and exciting to see the changes in myself, but what’s even more fun is seeing changes in people I love and care about. Once I made a commitment to juicing, my friends and family began asking me about what I was doing. They were seeing my results and wanted to know my secret. I realized I could make a difference and help a lot of people, too. In 2014 after the sudden death of my close friend Kim Pham, I was inspired to leave my 9-5 job and follow my passion for starting a full-time business. I started JuiceMi in my kitchen in a small apartment in Costa Mesa, California, and I haven’t looked back since.
